Docusate is used for getting relief from constipation. A stool softener, the drug also prevents dry and hard stools.
Docusate should only be taken as per your doctor’s direction. Always take what has been prescribed and not more than that. It should also not be taken for longer periods unless your doctor has prescribed it.

Docusate is an oral drug and can be taken with or without meals. The medicine has to be taken with a full glass of water. You should also take more fluids when you are on Docusate medication.

There is a possibility that you may loss normal bowel functions if the drug is taken in larger doses. You should not delay in contacting your doctor if you have rectal bleeding and experience sudden change in bowel movements.

The doctors do not prescribe Docusate drug should if you have stomach pain, nausea, rectal bleeding, stomach pain and vomiting.

It is not known if the drug can cause harm to the unborn or the new born. But even then, it is good to tell your doctor if you are carrying or breast feeding. Discuss with the doctor about all the risks and benefits to your child before using the drug.

Some medicines are known to interact with Docusate drug. So before the drug is taken, inform the doctor about all the medications that you are on, including prescription/ non-prescription drugs, dietary supplements and herbal preparations.

Throat irritation, bitter taste, diarrhoea, bloating, gas, rashes, hives, difficulty in breathing, tightness in chest, itching, swelling, nausea and vomiting are some of the most common side effects seen with Docusate.

Stomach ulcer: Causes, symptoms, and Diagnosis

In stomach there is a thick layer of mucus which protects the stomach from acidic digestive juices. Ulcers in stomach create issues when that protective layer is damaged or decayed to thinner. Subsequently, the direct contact of these digestive juices with the inner wall start affecting the tissues which causes the stomach ulcer. The digestive juices are also known as gastric juices and similarly the ulcers cause by it also known as gastric ulcers. It is a painful sore in the stomach lining. Sometimes, if the ulcers are linked with peptic juices, it is termed as kind of peptic ulcer. Apart from stomach, these ulcers commonly affect the small intestine. These ulcers can be well treated with appropriate medicines if rightly diagnosed in time. But, if such ulcers in organs are ignored or not detected in time it may become severe causing larger health problems.


Stomach ulcer is caused by any or many of the conditions like:

  • Using non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs(NSAIDs) over a period of time
  • Long time use of some common pain killers like aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, nimulside etc.
  • Tendency of Hyper acidity or taking acidic beverages or Alchohol.
  • Smoking can also cause stomach ulcers because of penetrating acid secretion by and large

In addition to the above, it is the Zollinger-Ellison disorder can cause ulcers in stomach. This disorder increases the making of acid and cause acidic imbalance. But, it is rarely seen and found in less than one percent of stomach ulcers cases.


Bloating, nausea, weight loss are the most common symptoms of stomach ulcers. But there are some other primary or secondary symptoms common for the ulcers like:

  • Least craving for eating
  • Unable to eat due to pain, vomiting
  • Acid reflux or burping
  • Feeling of dull pain in the stomach
  • Heart burn
  • In certain cases intake of foods, drinks increases the pain in the stomach
  • Dark and Tarry stools,
  • Appearance of pale skin
  • Tiredness and anemia


Patients feeling a mild pain in the stomach for a week or two should go for physical check up. Chronic ulcers cause bleeding inside and become fatal if not taken care in time. The diagnosis and method of treatment of such ulcers depends on the severity of the symptoms. There are some time tested laboratory procedure to diagnose stomach ulcer like:

  • Barium swallow

Barium is a fluid to be swallowed orally and directly. It is a kind of thick white liquid. Liquid Barrium coat the upper gastro intestinal tract from and within. It helps to find out the extent of the ulcers inside stomach and small intestine on the X-Ray film

  • Endoscopy

This process is commonly abbreviated as EGD. Through this procedure, a thin tube is inserted into the empty stomach to inspect the cavity inside. Endoscopy is more dependable and accurate than Barium X-ray for detecting ulcers.

To be sure of malignancy or to understand the actual state of the ulcer a piece of the stomach tissue is removed. It is called as Endoscopic Biopsy

  • Pathological Tests

Like routine or detail lab test is also prescribed to detect the H. pylori infection.
